Dr. Sturm is the current coordinator of the Berkeley County Orchestra Program and has been teaching strings in Berkeley County since January 2013.
She is a 2012 graduate of The University of Arizona earning a Ph.D. in Music Education with a minor in Orchestral Conducting. She holds degrees from Stony Brook University (Advanced Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Administration, 2013), Hofstra University (MSEd in Music Education, 2007, with honors), Long Island University, C.W. Post (MS in Music History & Literature, 2005) and Adelphi University (Music, 2003, cum laude). While in Arizona, Dr. Sturm served as the director of the UA String Project a musical outreach program for local Tucson children ages 3-14. Dr. Sturm is an upper string specialist (violin and viola) and has taught strings in several school districts across Long Island, New York and in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Sturm is published in the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education and the national journal for the American String Teachers Association. Dr. Sturm's research interest is the history of string education in the United States. She currently serves as the Historian for the West Virginia Music Educators Association and is also the current president of the WV String Teachers Association. During the 2015-16 school year, Dr. Sturm served as the state contact for the Tri-M Music Honor Society. As a performer, Dr. Sturm has served as principal viola in the Hofstra Opera Orchestra and Hofstra Symphony Orchestra as well as co-principal viola of the CW Post Symphony Orchestra. She has also sat as principal 2nd violin of the CW Post Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Sturm has participated in several master classes with the Shanghai String Quartet and members of the NY Philharmonic. Locally, she has performed with the Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra in Charles Town, WV and the Masterworks orchestra in Shepherdstown, WV. Dr. Sturm participated in the Ohio State String Teacher Workshop in the summer of 2015, and is currently working on a Professional Certificate in Arts Administration from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst. She has presented her research a the state levels in Arizona and West Virginia, as well as at the national and international levels. In October 2015, Dr. Sturm hosted WV String Day at Spring Mills High School with over 85 participants from across the state. When she is not teaching, Dr. Sturm enjoys hiking, reading, biking, cooking, visiting museums (especially Civil War Battlefields!), golfing, and spending time with her boyfriend, four cats, and dog. Dr. Sturm is an online adjunct professor for Saint Leo University (based in Florida). She was also an adjunct professor at Shepherd University where she co-directed the Community Orchestra. In Berkeley County, also on staff at Potomack Intermediate School & Spring Mills Middle School where she is the co-adviser for Tri-M Junior Chapter 6316.
